Cannabinoid receptor CB1 from humans

Tetrahydrocannabinol from hashish is effective in humans, since it activates a receptor designed for hormon-like substances of the human body – endocannabinoids. These endocannabinoids address several receptors. Here we are talking only about their best-known target, the CB1-receptor. CB1 receptors are located on neurocytes and moderate synaptic activities, with a reduction of pain and nausea as most important therapeutic properties. The receptor has been crystallized in complex with an artifical inhibitor (AM6538, given in green colour), which binds to a similar location as tetrahydrocannabinol.
